How to deal with stuffed emotions? Paint it out!

Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed by emotions? One girl once broke up with her boyfriend. Days after she felt like being in a cloud. She cried, she talked about it but she was still miserable. Amount of emotions was still stacked inside until she took watercolours and started painting.

We all have sometimes down days, something happened to us, boss shouted us at work, boyfriend broke up with us or we just lost direction in our life. Sensitive people experience emotions very intensely and very often just good talk doesn´t help.

Emotions are the way our body copes with events and situations.

Thanks to them we are alive. Unfortunately we don´t always want to feel negative emotions so we stuffed them deep inside. Worst way how to build serious damage on our mental health and coping mechanism.

She was painting hours and found her new passion. She realized something new though. She was happier. All those stuffed emotions got out on the paper and she felt freer.

Do you want to process your emotions in unpainful way? Paint them out.

Watercolours are probably the best as they´re nicely mixing together and you don´t need to think about any concrete shapes. Just take water and paints put headphones on with favourite music and get lost in the moment. I guarantee you will feel better afterwards maybe even like the huge stone felt out from your heart.

Beat overwhelmed feeling.

´Cooking a dinner. Take kids to the club. Doctor appointment tomorrow. Book accommodation in Spain for our holiday. That girl in an add looks like a whore. OMG I am loosing it.´ This is mind running three hundred of speed of 90% of people. Duties, duties and duties. Demands, demands and demands. We love it and hate it same time. If we could just get a break.

Art-therapy is based on mindfulness and expressing our deep desires, emotions, fears and struggles. Very often those are hidden in our subconscious and we use therapeutic techniques to bring them on light of our awareness. What if we are exactly aware what bother us. It´s actually tones of things in our head we have to carry, sort out, manage, process.

This little technique might be helpful if you feel overwhelmed by thoughts in your head. I like doing collages in busy times where I feel stressed and there is way too much going on in my life. This is great way how to take this thoughts out of my head and have a bit of relaxed and creative time.

This exercise is part of 100 art therapeutic exercises what I introduced in last article.

You can choose any size you want as any style you want. It is up to you what pictures you will include to the collage as it is up to you how you decorate the rest. Idea is put pictures in the shape of head (your head) and pictures represent more and less your thoughts (struggles, goals, desires etc.) or whatever are on your mind.

The key is not overthink it just take some magazines and cut out what ever catches your attention.

What a messy head. No wonder we feel overhelmed. If we could just get a break. Finally you did something for yourself and inner peace. Feel free to share your  outcome with others.

Hands to your past and future.

Today I would like show you very simple and easy artistic and therapeutic technique what might give you better perspective what is happening in your life and where you put your focus and values to.

Draw your two hands on the paper. One of them will represent past and one present or future. Colour hands with pencils, watercolours or use whatever you want. To every finger write one or two words what represent your goals/feelings/people etc. Draw and colour the way you feel to.

Hands can give you look to your past, what you straggled with and comparing with your present how you progressed. Future can give you an idea about your dreams and goals or where you would like to be going.

Looking back I think I was going through rough times. No aspiration at work, environment felt very hateful, emotionally dried and tired. Does it sound familiar to you?  My world was falling apart and only bright light was craft workshop I was going to on Saturday. Mindful crafts. Ideas I could use in my youth work. Workshop ´mindful crafts for children´ happened to be therapeutic session for myself. First crafty idea was masquerade mask. I remember that day I came home relaxed and fulfilled. I did finally something meaningful for myself. What a surprise when I looked closer on the mask and connect it with symbolism and uncover message my subconscious. Yes I was definitely going through rough times.

When use this craft making?

You can use this therapeutic craft whenever you want and feel. It is great way how to relax and cope once you feel anxious. It can help you to stop overthinking and just be present in the moment. It is great when you feel no motivation, sadness because again it takes your focus to something creative and away from your thought. It makes you present. You can use it as tool of better self-understanding because the way you create your mask will let you uncover a little bit more about yourself.
